How to Grow Pumpkin

Overview

Pumpkin is a warm-season, frost-tender vining squash grown for carving, pies, and fall decoration. Growers love it for big harvests, but it needs full sun, warm soil, steady moisture, and room to run. Give each plant 2–4 square meters and expect 75–100 days to mature.

Soil & planting prep

Pumpkins grow best in loose, well-drained loam or sandy loam with plenty of organic matter, ideally at pH 6.0–6.8. Work compost or aged manure into the planting area before sowing. Plant seeds 1 inch deep, and space plants so each has 2–4 square meters.

When to plant

Pumpkins are frost-tender and need warm soil. Direct sow after your last frost date, once soil has warmed to at least 60°F, usually 1–2 weeks later. For a head start, sow seeds indoors 3 weeks before the last frost and transplant outside only after frost danger has passed and soil is warm.

How to plant

1. Choose a full-sun spot with enough room for each plant to spread 2–4 square meters.
2. Work 2–4 inches of compost into the top 6–8 inches of soil, then form low mounds or hills 4–6 feet apart.
3. Direct sow 3–4 seeds per mound about 1 inch deep, or set one hardened-off transplant per mound at the same depth it was growing.
4. Water gently at the base after planting, and keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy while seeds germinate and seedlings establish.
5. Thin seedlings to the strongest 1–2 plants per mound after true leaves appear, and mulch once soil is warm to hold moisture and suppress weeds.

5 common mistakes to avoid

• Planting too early in cold soil causes pumpkin seeds to rot or seedlings to stall; wait until after the last frost and soil is at least 60°F.
• Crowding plants leads to powdery mildew, poor airflow, and small fruit; give each pumpkin at least 2–4 square meters.
• Using overhead watering wets leaves and invites powdery and downy mildew; water at the base, preferably in the morning.
• Poor pollination from lack of bees or insecticide use during bloom causes small fruit to shrivel and drop; plant flowers nearby and avoid spraying open blooms.
• Harvesting before the rind fully hardens shortens storage life; wait until the skin resists a thumbnail and the stem begins to dry.

Harvesting & storage

Pumpkins are ready when the fruit has full color, the rind is hard enough to resist a thumbnail, and the nearby tendril and stem start to dry. Cut the stem 3–4 inches from the fruit with sharp pruners, leaving the handle intact. Cure in a warm, dry place for 7–10 days, then store in a cool, dry spot around 50–55°F.

Companion planting

Good companions include corn, pole beans, and radishes, as in a Three Sisters planting. Avoid planting pumpkins near potatoes or other cucurbits to reduce shared pest and disease pressure.

Growing in containers

Pumpkins can grow in a container if you choose a bush or small-fruited variety and use at least a 15-gallon pot. Place it in full sun with quality potting mix, water consistently, and let vines trail or provide a trellis; large vining types still do better in the ground.

Pro tips

Direct sow or start indoors 3 weeks before last frost. Give each plant 2-4 sq metres. Water at the base to prevent fungal disease. Harvest when the skin is hard and the stem dries.
