About Curry Leaf Tree (Kadi Patta)

The curry leaf tree (Murraya koenigii) is the source of fresh kadi patta — the aromatic leaves irreplaceable in South Indian cooking. Fresh leaves bear no resemblance to dried. Grows beautifully as a container plant, overwintering indoors in cold climates.

Buy a small plant from an Indian grocery or specialty nursery — growing from seed is very slow. Pot in well-drained mix, full sun. Bring indoors before temperatures drop below 32°F. Water deeply but allow to dry between waterings. Harvest individual leaflets — never strip the whole stem at once.
