About Turmeric (Haldi)

Turmeric is the golden rhizome at the heart of Indian, Persian, and Southeast Asian cooking. Fresh turmeric has a brighter, more complex flavour than dried powder. Grow it as a container plant: plant a rhizome from the grocery store and harvest 8-10 months later.

Start indoors 8 weeks before last frost. Plant rhizomes 2-4 inches deep in rich, moist potting mix. Prefers warmth and partial shade (unlike most edibles). Foliage yellows and dies back when ready to harvest — dig up rhizomes and cure in a warm dry place for 2 weeks.
