Luffa (turai, ridge gourd) is a fast-climbing vine grown for its ridged edible young fruits — used in Indian, Chinese, and Filipino cooking. Mature dried fruits become natural loofah sponges. Dual purpose: eat young, scrub with old.

Start indoors 4 weeks before last frost. Needs a very sturdy trellis — vines grow 10+ feet and fruit is heavy. Harvest at 6-8 inches for eating (soft, mild, like zucchini). For loofah sponges, leave on vine until the skin turns brown and dry.
